I opened my door and started to push her in, then remembered my bad luck with cars.
Technically I was a great driver, but I had gotten us into one too many crashes.
I had the feeling it was because of that haze that Iâd been feeling, but even though it was gone now, I wasnât gonna take a risk.
Emily had gotten us away so far, so Iâd let her continue driving.
âGo on. Get us out of here.â
She ran around to the other side and got in the driverâs seat as I got in the passengerâs. She put the car in drive and looked at me, her eyes flicking down to my crotch. âMight want to put that weapon away.â
I smiled, despite it all, and put myself away. Then reached over and pulled her shirt down over her breast.
âThanks,â she said, pulling us out onto the road. We rolled the windows down and she kept the car going slow enough that the engine didnât turn on.
Hey look at that, a Prius was useful after all. That didnât mean they were growing on me.
I listened, and also checked on Emma, who I saw was still asleep.
I noticed she had napkins stuffed in her ears.
It didnât seem like a very alien thing to do.
I returned my attention outside, listening for the sound.
âItâs definitely getting closer,â Emily said.
I nodded. I couldnât tell what direction it was coming from though. âKeep going this way. See if it gets louder. Also keep an eye out for anywhere to turn off the road. Even a dirt path.â
Ten seconds later Emily pointed. âThere.â
Up ahead was a path into the woods, and Emily quickly pulled us onto it until we were shrouded by the trees and turned the car off, plunging us into blackness.
There were no street lights in these woods, just the light of the moon and stars.
The noise grew steadily louder, and about a minute later, headlights appeared.
They were going slow.
Slow enough to see it was the same truck that the women had been in.
âShit,â Emily muttered. âTheyâre persistent.â
âAt least you donât have to feel guilty about them getting killed. They didnât.â
âI think Iâd prefer my guilt to this.â
âYeah. Maybe.â
The truck went past, then stopped.
Then started backing up.
âShit. They saw us. Get us out of here.â
Emily did. We went in the opposite direction and took the first exit.
It led to a neighborhood and Emily sped through it until spotting a house with an open garage, which she pulled into.
âGetââ
But she didnât have to tell me. I was already hopping out and going for the garage door, pulling it down hard.
Something snapped, perhaps the mechanism connecting it to the motor, and it crashed down.
Twenty seconds later I heard the truck go by, then continue on.
âJesus Christ how theyâd find us?â I wondered aloud.
I looked to the car and saw Emma sitting up and looking around. She opened the door stretched, swinging her legs out, then pulling napkin out of her ears. âWhatâs going on?â she asked groggily.
For a second, she was Emma again, the old Emma, the one Iâd thought was human, and I almost went to her.
